Thanks for visiting us. Guests are always welcome at Angier Baptist. Thanks for taking time to explore our website. I hope you'll find something helpful while you're here.
We are, as our mission statement says a community of faith in which we are, "to lead religious and non- religious people to become fully devoted followers of Christ through teaching, worship, and service." We all need a place that we belong. We are family here and it is our hope to make you experience this wonderful fellowship.
As you view our site, I would convey to you that though we have many wonderful opportunities and ministries, our greatest asset is our people. We are family and strive to experience genuine community with expression of honest faith. Of course Jesus Christ is the center for all we are and do. That is why we put him at the center of all we are and do. He is the focus of our worship, the standard by which truth and goodness are measured, the model for our relationships with each other, the pattern for our compassion toward those who struggle, and the source of our unity. We desire to follow Jesus.
So, if you're looking for a place where love is shown and a place where your faith can be nurtured, please let us help you become connected to our church. This website describes some of the ways those connections might happen.
Grover K. Blackburn, Jr., Pastor
History
Angier Baptist Church is located in the town of Angier, in the southern Bible Belt. It began in 1883, while Chester AS. Arthur was President of the United States and T. J. Jarvis was Governor of North Carolina. God began stirring the hearts of a small group of families living near the growing community of Angier. The Rev. A. N. Campbell, father of Rev. J. A. Campbell, (founder of then Buies Creek Academy, now Campbell University), had been preaching in the homes in the Currin's Cross Road area. When the groups grew to be too large to meet in homes, Rev. Campbell called them to meet in an abandoned whiskey warehouse, and on September 18, 1883, New Life Baptist Church was organized. Six people moved their letters from Neil's Creek Baptist Church and thirteen people came forward for baptism. During the Baptismal service at a nearby pond. two others joined and were baptized. Minutes of the November 1, 1883 Little River Association Report indicate the New Life Baptist Church was received into the Association as a member.
Rev. Campbell became the first pastor and served until 1889. Nineteen pastors served the church during the ensuing years, with Rev. Grover K. Blackburn becoming the twenty-first on March 1, 1994.
During the years, the church buildings have changed from the first, an abandoned warehouse measuring about 18x30 feet, to a one-room structure built in 1884. The one-room structure was torn down in 1900 and transplanted into town and used until an octagonal-shaped building was finished in 1925. The present facility was dedicated on October 6, 1957. Additions and renovations have taken place and more land has been purchased since then. There are presently nine acres of land owned by the church.
Membership has grown from less than twenty-five members to a resident membership of 473. The members have served the community with ministries to every age group in many ways; through Sunday School, WMU, mission trips, a church food closet, Meals on Wheels, Rest Home ministries, choirs and prayer. A Hispanic church uses our building for Sunday School and worship services.
The past speaks of many who sacrificed to reach others for Christ. That record stands. The future challenges us to preserve the past, learn from it, and be inspired to move forward, taking the message of salvation through belief in Jesus, our Savior, to all people. |
